Carmel Publishing House, established in 1987, is dedicated to bringing the finest original and translated literary and scholarly works to the Israeli public.  Our catalogue includes a broad range of classical and contemporary titles in order to provide Hebrew readers with a rich selection of the best in poetry, fiction and scholarship.

The Carmel list of original works by Israeli authors reflects its ongoing commitment to enriching Israeli culture and to providing a platform for new and creative authors.

Carmel Publishing House is a major publisher of modern Hebrew poetry.  The quarterly journal of poetry, Carmel (edited by Shlomo Laufer), regularly publishes contributions by acclaimed poets and by exceptionally talented new voices.  It is considered by poetry aficionados to be the leading poetry journal in the country.

The list of original volumes of poetry is extensive and refreshing.  Alongside the collections of established poets, special efforts have been made to identify the leading poets of the new generation and to offer an outlet for their exciting and frequently path-breaking works.

Carmel’s emphasis on literary quality and innovation is also evident in the works of fiction it publishes by recognized and promising authors.  Of special note are the new works by such authors as Yuval Yavneh, Ayala Yoked and Orit Gross that were published during the past year.

 The catalogue also contains a broad range of theoretical and scholarly studies in the fields of literary criticism, history, philosophy, and politics.  Some recent additions include studies by Yoram Bronovsky, Menahem Regev, Benjamin Sofer, Shmuel Shimoni, Ilan Rahum, and Avner Holtzman. 

Carmel Publishing House is especially proud of its series, Focus on the Present, under the general editorial guidance of Professor Gaby Sheffer. The latest addition to this series, Geography of Occupation by Elisha Efrat, has enjoyed widespread success.  Other important volumes in this series include Yael Yishay’s work on civil society in Israel, Ami Pedhatzur’s examination of Israeli democracy, Faisal Azaizeh’s study of Arab citizens of Israel, and Yoram Meital’s reinterpretation of the Arab-Israel conflict.

Carmel Publishing House, through its major translation enterprise, offers the Israeli reader a glimpse of the inner worlds of diverse peoples and cultures today and in the past.  The catalogue presents a rich variety of superior works of literature and non-fiction translated from many different languages and reflective of the richness inherent in divergent historical and cultural traditions.

Carmel has introduced several unique translation series, each devoted to the literature of a particular language, culture, or region.

Our Sea is a special series that seeks to sensitize Israeli readers to the natural cultural environment in which they live. By breaking the physical boundaries surrounding Israel and exposing readers to the rich cultural heritage of the peoples residing along the shores of the Mediterranean, an attempt is made to expand linkages and foster solidarity with other groups in the region. The colorful and multi-cultural heritage of the Mediterranean basin comes alive in the Hebrew translations of some of the most distinct writings that have emerged in this part of the world:

The Carmel catalogue also contains many books published in association with the Great Works Project, a government-subsidized initiative that encourages translations of classical works into Hebrew.  This list includes works by Honore de Balzac, Alberto Moravia, J.W. Goethe, George Eliot, Isaac Bashevis-Singer and Giovanni Boccaccio.
